Tax Education
Seminars for NGOs
Sustainable, effective and efficient NGOs that comply with relevant laws are
important for the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the
country’s Vision 2030.
As part of the government’s efforts to enhance NGOs contribution to the
foregoing, the NGOs Co-ordination Board and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
have jointly organized a series of capacity building workshops for NGOs.
These workshops are aimed at providing NGOs with relevant information to improve
their compliance and governance and at the same time increase their
understanding on the enabling roles of the NGOs Board and KRA.
The workshops cover among other things: -
·
Income tax exemption procedures and legal
provisions
·
Vat exemption procedures and legal
provisions
·
Customs services procedures and legal
provisions
·
KRA online services overview
·
Legal and regulatory obligations for NGOs
The workshops also provide an opportunity for NGOs to ask specific questions on
taxation issues affecting them.
The first of these workshops was held on 22nd March, 2011 at the
Times Tower in Nairobi. The workshop targeted NGOs with an annual income of over
KES 100 and/or international NGOs with offices in Nairobi. A total of 90 NGOs
participated in this workshop.
The second workshop was held on 29th March, 2011 at the Mombasa Beach
Hotel. The workshop targeted NGOs from the Coast Region. A total of 87 NGOs
attended the workshop.
The third and
fourth of the series of these workshops will be held on Monday, 18th
April 2011 in Eldoret and Wednesday, 20th April 2011 in Kisumu for
NGOs in the Upper Rift and Western/Nyanza Region respectively.
